| "WHY I'M OPTIMISTIC ABOUT
COUNTRY" by Joel Raab Four of the five biggest superstars in our format have new releases -- The Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw and Shania Twain. Two of those four acts are likely ONLY to be heard on Country radio. Promotional opportunities abound, and the stations taking advantage of this wealth of riches will score big in the Fall. And, the new generation is making music that sounds like it will last: Joe Nichols, Kevin Denney, Montgomery Gentry, and Keith Urban, among others. The even better news is that these artists are likely to be exclusive to Country … plus, they are male artists. Men's Room This is nothing against the ladies, but the last time Country got hot, the flame was fueled by male artists, i.e. Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson and Clint Black. Toby Keith and Kenny Chesney have reached superstar status and their new CD's are strong. And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, Alan Jackson took his game to a higher level. America, The Beautiful and COUNTRY! The patriotic mood of the Country is best reflected in America's Music -- Country music. Do problems still exist in the Country format? Sure. I'll save those for another column. For the moment, let's focus on the good things that are happening and take advantage of the cards we are being dealt. | |
